What Do I Need to Be Successful in Medical Chemistry Research?It is important to know medicinal chemistry research for your interest in becoming a medicinal chemist. Most of the research is done at universities, which may be a good place to start if you are an aspiring chemist. The research involves the study of chemical reactions and biochemistry, as well as research on alternative medicines and different types of drugs.The first step is to determine what type of educational background you will need to attend school in this field. Some schools require certification for a student to enroll in their program. Other schools provide degrees in basic undergraduate and postgraduate studies, although most schools offer both a certificate and bachelor's degrees. There are many different certifications to choose from and it is important to consult with a doctor and find out what types of certifications he recommends for the job of medicinal chemist.The first education course is the school's f reshman year. The school will establish the chemistry degree program after assessing the student's interests and abilities in the subject. A common curriculum for all chemistry majors is two years of biology or physics, followed by four years of chemistry courses.A college degree in organic chemistry is a prerequisite to take any course in medicinal chemistry. During the sophomore year, the student will be required to take an approved medical ethics course. This science is very essential because most people have questions about the relationship between pharmaceutical drugs and certain diseases.At the end of the junior year, students will have to pass a pre-biochemistry course. Students who fail to take this course will be required to take classes in organic chemistry and molecular biology. A biochemistry course, such as Molecular Biology or Biochemistry, will usually come with an introduction to organic chemistry.The last major course is chemical engineering, which focuses on some o f the more complex aspects of organic chemistry. Students will learn how to make and design complexes and understand their bonding. Biochemistry and biochemical engineering courses are usually offered concurrently, though this isn't always the case. This is usually based on when the school was founded.In addition to these courses, students will also want to be familiar with the school's training program. Courses will vary depending on the length of the program. Coursework that is part of the coursework includes thermodynamics, molecular geometry, kinetic modeling, macromolecular theory, chemical kinetics, and the theory of linear resonance.To finish up a successful graduate program, students will have to go through the dissertation defense. Usually this will be done in the fourth year.
